Fields of interest

  • Urbanisation and Mobility

  • Regional Minority Dynamics in China
  • Francophone Urban Space in Canada
  • Spatial and Statistical Analysis
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Dr Huhua Cao has been involved in extensive research activities in North America, Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. In recent years, his research has focused on regional minority development and around the following two axes: 1) Ethnic minority, Mobility and Urbanisation; 2) Spatial inequality and Accessibility of social services. The majority of his research is founded on the usage of geostatistical methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and finds application in two areas of study: Official Language Minority Communities (OLMCs) in Canada (local level) and Minority regions in China (international level).

Dr. Cao has been interested in minority societies in Canada for more than ten years. His research aims to better understand the processes and mechanisms of profound spatial transformations in minority francophone urban spaces in relation to the spatiotemporal dynamic of distribution of institutional social services. Dr. Cao has twice been recognized by SSHRC since 2000 as principal investigator for research on francophone minorities in New Brunswick, with a focus on accessibility to social public services. His research experience with Canadian minority groups has been particularly enriching as he has started to implement these approaches in China in recent years.

Economic reforms since the end of 1970s have changed China tremendously. China’s phenomenal economic growth during the last thirty years, along with its hosting of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, have captured high attention of the world. Despite its incredible economic development, however, since the 1990s China has also experienced dramatic increases in regional inequality. China is in fact becoming a polarized society in three dimensions: inland-coastal (geographic disparity), rural-urban (sectoral disparity) and minority-majority (social disparity). This phenomenon is at the heart of a multitude of serious problems that are threatening the sustainable development of Chinese society, as well as social cohesion within the country. In recent years, Dr. Cao, of Chinese Manchu ethnic extraction, has developed a series of important research projects with Chinese colleagues, resulting in a number of successful book and article publications.
